Working within a pre-defined budget of approximately $10,000,000 per school, value engineering was conducted to achieve the highest quality and quantity of facility space for the new middle schools. Each school was designed to accommodate educational and extra-curricular programs and other general community needs. Heritage Middle School, located on the Heritage High School campus, is a 110,000 square foot structure. Carpenters Middle School, the first of three buildings planned for the Sneed farm property is approximately 114,000 square feet. The schools feature a two story lobby welcoming parents and students into the facility.
The Administrative area is designed to accommodate not only the expected administrative functions, but also provide ample space for parent/teacher conferences. Offices for Guidance, Speech, Vision and Hearing testing are included, as is a school psychologist’s office. A full size gymnasium was provided for the schools. Seating approximately 700, the gymnasium complex provides coaches’ offices, physical education and team sport areas. A Health Studies classroom is also provided. |

The Blount County Board of Education selected Fletcher Architects to design their first new facilities in over 20 years. Fletcher Architects Inc., selected Barber & McMurry Architects as a joint venture partner to implement a comprehensive facilities program related to the development of middle schools in Blount County. Our work involved the design of two new middle schools. The Joint Venture Team worked with an educational consultant selected by the Blount County Board of Education as well as the System’s faculty and staff to develop a facilities’ program representing the current curricula. The facilities were designed to be sufficiently flexible to accommodate future changes and growth.
Both facilities contain 31 regular classrooms, including a science lecture room and separate science laboratory for each grade level. Specialized rooms are provided for Inclusion, CDC/ABC, computer technology, career technology, Home Science, music, art and in-school suspension.
